Prey For Death!

This alien lands in his UFO (of which we see only flashing lights) and immediately attacks a necking couple in a car out in the middle of Nowhere, England. He has a putty nose that makes him sort of look like a fox along with big, shiny fangs. Otherwise, he looks completely, normally human. After killing the man, he takes the human’s identity, looking just like him, and bumbles around in the forest for a while. He ends up at a run-down building on the property of a lesbian who stumbles across him with her lover. He introduces himself as Anders Anderson, and the ladies invite him to stay with them for a while because he appears hurt. Lead lesbian, Josephine, is immediately suspicious of him and doesn’t want his man-energy around. Her girlfriend, Jessica, is intrigued by Anders. She also is wanting out of her strained relationship with her looney lover. And who can blame her? Josephine is nice and loving one moment, completely hysterical and crazy the next. Literally, within two lines of dialogue she flies back and forth. In any case, they both soon learn that Anders really is weird, can’t eat food without throwing up, and sits around acting strangely unattached. Eventually, after lots and lots of talking and the plot going nowhere, Anders reveals his true self and he attacks and kills the women. At the end, he fires up his radio equipment, calls back home to his alien brothers, and announces that humans are weak, and the invasion can begin!

This is a very strange movie. There are parts that are highly entertaining but they are hobbled by long, boring passages that are simple padding for running time. The make-up FX aren’t great but that’s okay, they add some charm, and extra points for going with the “fox-human-hybrid” look. It’s a bit like the old Universal Wolf-Man, just not nearly as hairy. There are a couple of decent kills and there’s some blood, but again, long, long passages of Anders being weirdly docile juxtaposed with the ongoing relationship troubles of our lovely (soon to be) damsels in distress. There are a couple of hot lesbian sex scenes, in there for no other reason except to be licentious (this is 70’s Exploitation, ya know), and they do liven things up a bit. The best thing about the film is the fact that Anders is obviously mentally disturbed, throws up his food every time he tries to eat something other than human flesh, and no alarm bells are raised. I guess the point is that the women are too caught up in their own domestic squabble to catch the warning signs, but Jesus.

Prey is an interesting slice of late-70’s British exploitation that would be a classic if not for the boring parts. Watch if you’re into this kind of scene, and you know who you are. For me, this was worth watching once but probably never again. More blood and more sex would have bumped it up a point.
